A Collection of Maps in Ancient China (457 BC to 1911)

The ancient Chinese made the world's first maps. In mapping theory and techniques they once lead the world.

This atlas provides a vivid picture of the development of Cartography in China over a period of almost 2,400 years from the Warring States Period (475-211BC) to the last years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

The maps contained in this volume are accompanied by scientific analyses garnered with painstaking efforts by the authors from voluminous historical records and documents. This volume presents convincing evidence about China's important position in the history of world surveying and mapping.

Compiled by the Research Institute of Surveying and Mapping, the maps in this atlas have been reproduced from precious collections kept in libraries, museums, departments in charge of antiquities and archaeological data and stores of antiquated books across China as well as from private collections.
